So, you’ve got a fantastic idea for a video. Maybe it’s a heart-warming commercial, a pulse-pounding documentary, or a hilarious web series. But before you grab your camera and yell “Action!”, there’s a crucial stage you can’t skip: pre-production.
After moving to Atlanta almost 10 years ago, my initial draw to media was photography – plain and simple. Filmmaking, video production, and any professional endeavor of the sort had not yet crossed my mind. Therefore, I hadn’t become privy to the industry practices followed in video production, even when I started shooting video. It wasn’t until I followed a few local filmmakers that I discovered the parallels between my experiences as an event coordinator and just how important a production schedule and checklist actually is.
Think of pre-production as building a sturdy foundation for your house. The stronger the base, the smoother your shoot will go, and the less likely you are to encounter unexpected problems.
Here’s a comprehensive pre-production checklist to guide you, step-by-step:
Lock Down Your Script:
A polished script is your roadmap. It outlines the story, dialogue, and action, ensuring everyone is on the same page.
Revise and refine your script until you’re confident it delivers your message clearly and engagingly.
Craft a Budget:
Be realistic about your expenses. Factor in equipment rental, location fees, talent costs, and even unforeseen situations.
A well-defined budget helps you allocate resources effectively and avoid financial roadblocks during production.
Assemble Your Dream Team:
No video is an island. Depending on the project’s scale, you might need a director, cinematographer, sound engineer, and editors.
Hire experienced professionals who share your vision and can bring their expertise to the table.
Break Down the Script:
This detailed breakdown translates your script into actionable steps. It identifies every scene, shot, prop, costume, and actor required.
A thorough script breakdown helps with scheduling, logistics, and ensuring you have everything you need on set.
Scout and Secure Locations:
Whether it’s a bustling city street or a cozy living room, location scouting is key.
Visit potential locations, considering factors like lighting, sound, and access to permits. Secure permission to film beforehand to avoid any complications.
Plan the Perfect Shot
To plan the perfect shot, you should use storyboards. Storyboards are a visual representation of your video, depicting each scene with drawings or photographs. This helps you plan camera angles, movement, and composition, leading to a more cohesive final product.
Create Your Lists:
Make detailed lists of props, costumes, makeup, and any other items needed for each scene.
Assigning someone responsible for these elements ensures everything is accounted for and avoids scrambling on set.
Gear Up!:
Do you have the right cameras, microphones, lighting equipment, and other technical tools?
Rent or secure the necessary gear well in advance to avoid last-minute shortages.
Schedule, Schedule, Schedule:
Develop a realistic shooting schedule that factors in scene complexity, location changes, and crew availability.
A well-defined schedule keeps everyone organized and ensures you make the most of your production days.
Pre-Production Meetings:
Regular meetings with your team are essential to discuss logistics, address concerns, and ensure everyone is on the same page.
Open communication is key to a smooth-running production.
Bonus Tip! Create Call Sheets:
Distribute daily call sheets to the cast and crew, outlining the shooting schedule, location details, and scene information for each day.
By following these steps and creating a comprehensive pre-production plan, you’ll be well on your way to a successful and stress-free shoot. Remember, pre-production is an investment in your project’s final quality. So, take the time to do it right, and you’ll reap the rewards later!
