The artist’s journey began with a simple yet profound gift. “My aunt gave me my first watercolor set and two coloring books one Christmas Eve. I stayed up all night painting and coloring every page,” she recalls. That moment marked the beginning of an artistic exploration that would shape her life. What started as a childhood pastime soon evolved into a deep and abiding love for creating art.
A Detour into Cosmetology
Despite her early passion, the path to becoming a full-time artist was not direct. At the age of 19, she immigrated to the United States and shifted her focus to cosmetology. For four decades, she dedicated herself to a career in beauty and styling, setting aside her artistic endeavors. However, art was never truly forgotten—it remained a quiet passion, waiting for the right time to resurface.
Returning to Art with Heart
Now retired from cosmetology, the artist has fully embraced her creative journey once more. Her collection, aptly named “Art from the Heart,” reflects the deeply personal and intuitive nature of her work. “I try not to limit my creativity. I create whatever comes to mind,” she explain. Her self-taught approach allows for boundless exploration, often surprising even herself with the results.
The Influence of Black History
As an artist of Guyanese heritage, the impact of Black history resonates deeply. “Slavery in Guyana was different from in America, but we all came from the transatlantic slave trade. We just ended up in different places,” she reflects. A passionate history enthusiast, she emphasized the importance of educating future generations about their heritage. “I have grandchildren, and I don’t know if they fully grasp our history. It’s our responsibility to make them aware of where we came from.”
Art as a Lifelong Calling
For this artist, creativity is more than a skill—it is a way of life. From childhood paintings to a rekindled passion in retirement, her story exemplifies the power of perseverance and self-expression. “Art is my first love,” she affirmed, embracing the journey that has brought her full circle back to the canvas.
