Doctor in Atlanta Speaks to Black Women in Media

Health Guide: The Procedure That Replaces Hysterectomy for Black Women (UFE)

Critical Health Guide: The Procedure That Replaces Hysterectomy and Saves the Uterus

By Jean Alon Media |

Summary

During a conversation with Shon Murdock (FUBU), a physician unveiled a little-known procedure called UFE (Uterine Fibroid Embolization) that directly replaces the need for a hysterectomy for benign fibroids. The physician highlighted the high rate of unnecessary hysterectomies and urged that Black women be informed of all options to avoid losing an organ. The UFE procedure is performed in 30 minutes, allows the patient to go home with a Band-Aid, and still allows the possibility of having children after.

Industry veteran Shon Murdock recently hosted a conversation with a physician, stating his passion for the talk stemmed from the doctor’s dedication to Black women’s health. Murdock powerfully underscored his lifelong gratitude, noting that a Black woman “picked me up” every time he fell and “helped me out” when he needed a push in his career. He emphasized, “when mama’s not feeling well, the whole family’s not”.

The Life-Changing Procedure: UFE

The physician’s core message was the urgent need for awareness of a procedure he helped develop: UFE (Uterine Fibroid Embolization). This procedure directly replaces the need for a hysterectomy when dealing with benign fibroids, the most common reason for the major surgery.

  • Procedure Details: UFE is a 30-minute procedure done from the inside.
  • Recovery: Women go home after a few hours of recovery with a Band-Aid.
  • Fertility: Women can even have children after the procedure.

The Tuskegee Warning and Surgeon Bias

The conversation pivoted to sobering statistics: hysterectomy is the second most common surgery in the United States, yet half the population doesn’t even have a uterus. The average age of this surgery is under 40.

The physician delivered a powerful warning, stating that many young Black women undergoing the procedure are enduring the “Tuskegee experiment of your lifetime” without realizing it. This is because, while gynecologists know about UFE, they are surgeons who “like to operate”. The problem is that women are often only getting the surgical options presented to them.

“I put this procedure—this UFE procedure in terms of significance—up with the mammogram and the PAP smear,” the physician stated, underscoring its life-changing potential.

Unfortunately, many young women are giving in to surgery because they are suffering and not being presented with alternatives. After his talk at Tuskegee, many women under 30 approached him in tears, saying it was “too late”—they had already had a hysterectomy they did not want.

Call to Action: This Story Needs to be Told

The physician urged the media: “This story needs to be told, it’s way overdue.” UFE is a life-changing, transformational procedure that every woman is entitled to know about.

As a resource for the community, Jean Alon Media urges all press members to take on this vital health conversation.
